Gear Review - Kryptonite KryptoFlex Combination Cable Lock

The Kryptonite KryptoFlex Combination Cable Lock is a bike lock that provides a medium level of security and a high level of flexibility. The 4 digit combination locking mechanism is convenient because you never have to worry about remembering to bring a key. In addition, the flexible six feet long cable allows you to secure a bike to an assortment of racks and other immovable objects. However, a cable lock's flexibility comes at the expense of reduced security because they are easier for thieves to cut than are U-locks. If you lock your bike up overnight or in a high risk location then it is advocated to also use a more secure but less flexible U-lock. The following picture shows the Kryptonite KryptoFlex installed underneath my bike seat and seat pack.

Tips for using the Kryptonite KryptoFlex:

• Only use your cable lock in low risk, high visibility areas
• Use a bicycle helmet lock in conjunction with a cable lock to secure a helmet
• In high risk areas, lock your bike using both a U-lock and a cable lock:
  
  1. 1) Use a U-lock to secure the front tire and bike frame to an immovable object
  2. 2) Use a cable bike lock to secure the front tire, bike frame, and back tire to an immovable object
